The main mosquito-borne diseases affecting humans in Europe are West Nile Fever (WNV), dengue, Chikungunya and Usutu. Local transmission of other diseases such as Zika has not been detected in Europe but there is a risk for potential introduction. The only available control method for all these infectious diseases is the effective vector control.
In the proposed project entomological, epidemiological, climatological and geographical data from Germany and Greece that are already available and/or to be produced by our partners, key actors in the field of pathogen detection and vector control in Europe, are used in order to develop a common Early Warning System for mosquito borne diseases to be implemented and evaluated in both countries.
The know-how and expertise of two major European research institutes in the fields of virology, climatology and modelling (BNITM, AUTH) are being shared and the results of this collaboration are currently exploited by two important mosquito control operators in Europe (GFS/IfD - KABS and Ecodevelopment S.A.) for wide are mosquito control operations.
