Epidemiological surveillance and Earth observation

Dr. Spiros Mourelatos, the coordinator of the EWSMD (Early Warning System for Mosquito-borne Diseases) research project, a bilateral Greek – German collaboration explains to the audience the reasons for periodical mosquito nuisance and the methodologies of the mosquito control programme in Central Macedonia. Special emphasis is given to the breeding sites in the urban system and to how citizens can contribute to the reduction of breeding sites in private places and how they should use personal protection measures. The use of new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Earth Observation for the monitoring of surface waters and thus as decision-making tool for mosquito control and for the forecasting of adult mosquito abundances and risk assessment for mosquito-borne diseases as in the frame of the EWSMD project are elaborated.
